Champions League in Chennai

India's three leading cricket centres, Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai, will host the inaugural Twenty20 Champions League in December, organisers said on Thursday.

The six-million dollar tournament, featuring eight T20 club sides from India, Australia, South Africa, England and Pakistan, will be held from December 3-10, League chairman Lalit Modi told reporters here. Modi, who organised the hugely successful Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 competition earlier this year, said the match schedule will be announced later. But he confirmed Mumbai as the venue of the final on December 10.

The eight teams are IPL finalists Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, Western Australia and Victoria (Australia), Titans and Dolphins (South Africa), Middlesex (England) and the winners of Pakistan's Twenty20 League to be held next month.

The teams will be divided into two groups for a preliminary league, with the top two advancing to the semi-finals. "I believe we have a concept that will inspire and motivate the future generations of club, state and county cricketers, while accelerating the development of the game globally," said Modi. "I am confident that this will be a true global event, the scale of which the cricketing world has not seen outside of the World Cups."

The tournament has been sandwiched in the eight-day break between England's one-day series in India which ends on December 2 and the first Test which starts in Ahmedabad on December 11.

The pan-Asian ESPN-Star network secured the 10-year commercial rights for the tournament for a whopping 900 million dollars earlier this month, paying an additional 75 million dollars as marketing costs.

The second edition of the Champions League will be enlarged to 12 teams and will take place between September 25 and October 10 next year, said Modi. The recent boom in Twenty20 cricket, sparked by the lucrative IPL, has led to growing concerns about the future of traditional Test and one-day cricket.

Google's chrome

Got bored of the aged Internet Explorer and Firefox, same old browsers, same old standard looks, want something new ??? Here it comes google's new open-source browser known as chrome. Google has announced the release of its beta version, which ll hit almost 100 countries globally.

Google has reported that it has added so many new features in its new chrome. The new features include isolated tabs, powerful java script so as to prevent the browser from frequent crashes which we all would have met with the latest release of few browsers.

"Why are we launching Google Chrome? Because we believe we can add value for users and, at the same time, help drive innovation on the web," as reported by Sundar Pichai, vice president of product management, and Linus Upson, Google engineering director in their blogspot.

They have also released a comic that depicts various Google engineers describing Chrome's features. Check out the blogspot for more details about chrome and the comic for more pics of chrome.

Smokers be(a)ware of the new rule

A bad news for al those rail engines that smoke in every tea stall and small shops of the city, cos they won be able to smoke anywhere in public from 2nd of next month. With the birthday of our Gandhiji comes the new rule infact a ban to say it exactly. The more bad news is government is empowering school principals, postmen, railway stationmasters, even your boss to book you if you're caught smoking in a public place. The health ministry has already sent the rule for gazette notification and will make it public in the second week of September.

'The government is yet to approve a fine of Rs.2,000 for those caught smoking in public,' said a senior health ministry official. 'So we are implementing the new Smoking in Public Places Rules 2008 with the old fine amount - up to Rs.200.' The new rule will also expand the definition of public places from government buildings to include all office buildings, hospitals, schools, colleges, railway stations, airports, bus stands, hotels and restaurants. 'With the public notification, we will empower principals of schools, colleges, station masters, postman, airport authorities to challan (book) those smoking in public places. Once caught, the smoker will have to pay Rs.200 or whatever he has if he is carrying less than that amount,' the official told IANS.

To start the process, the official said, in the last one week they fined eight employees of the Nirman Bhawan, the building that houses the health ministry, urban development ministry, and some other government offices. Hundreds of thousands of people lose their lives due to smoking related diseases in India every year. They are at risk from all cardio-vascular diseases like heart attack and stroke and cancer.

Government estimates say that though the tobacco industry brings revenue of Rs.270 billion to the country every year, the treatment cost of the disease burden is at least Rs.300 billion. The ministry said that with the new rules coming into force, all hotels with at least 30 rooms and restaurants with a sitting capacity of 30 will be barred from allowing their guests to smoke. 'They may come up with a smoking lounge but it will be mandatory that smoke from inside the lounge must not affect people outside it.'
